Baby Legs

Maggie and I picked up a pair of leg warmers on clearance at Target for $2.78 yesterday.  She wasted no time putting them on after we returned home.

Me:  Do you like your new leg warmers?

Maggie:  Yeah, but they no keep my bottom warm.

Hmmmm.

On Saturday afternoon Cate ran into the kitchen.

"Mom," she says.  "Did Uncle Devin do brain surgery in the Army?"

"Um, no."  I reply.  "Definitely not."

Cate thinks about this for a minute and a look of relief spreads across her face.  She says, "Oh."

"Why do you ask, Cate?" I say.

"Well," she said. "Uncle Devin said that he was going to do brain surgery and remove the smart parts from my brain.  Then he said he was going to charge me a nickel to get each one of the smart parts back.  He can't do that, can he?"

"Um, no."  I reply.  "Definitely not."

Baby News.

Although most of our friends and family know by now, I thought I should make an "official" announcement on this blog.  Other than their baby books which (thankfully) end with the first birthday, this blog is the only record of their childhood that my children will have.

And so...

We are expecting the arrival of Baby K #4 mid-March.

I've waited to post this news here in the hopes that inspiration would strike and I would find a clever way to post this news or figure out how to get my kids to pose for a funny photograph that would immediately telegraph "new baby" to you all.

But, in reality, I can't even figure out how to change Maggie's blog label from "Baby K" to "Maggie."  And she is almost 3.  And I certainly haven't had time to scan Baby K #4's ultrasound although it would be nice to share a picture with you all.  And then it was Thanksgiving.  And now it's almost Christmas so if I truly wait for inspiration to strike then I would probably end up simply sharing a birth announcement here.

So let me simply say, we're thrilled about this upcoming addition to our family.

The kids are outrageously excited.  Over the moon.

And yes, before you even have a chance to ask, this is the final addition to our family.

And yes, I am sure.

Oh Christmas Tree--continued!

(Every year I'm amazed at how small the tree seems at the tree farm and how big it seems in my house).

I'm so thankful for this happy, healthy, crazy and loveable crew.

Oh Christmas Tree!

This afternoon we headed to Handley's tree farm to pick out the perfect Christmas tree.

In contrast to last year's outing in the freezing rain, this year's weather (40 degrees and sunny) was much more pleasant.

Cate, Ben, and Maggie hopped on the Frosty Express right away.  It was a good strategy as halfway through their trip the train ran over a branch and derailed.  The engineer was able to finish the last loop but the train was still closed for repairs as we were leaving.

After 20 minutes of searching we did find the perfect tree.  Candy canes from the office topped off the trip.

 All aboard the Frosty Express

Maggie is a little apprehensive about the Frosty, which turns out to be wise.  Luckily Cate is there to hold her hand.

More Idaho Fun

After we left the cabin we headed back to Pocatello, Idaho to spend time with Grandpa Steve, Grandma Lu, and lots of aunts, uncles and cousins.

One night a photographer came over to capture the mayhem as it was the first time that all of the grandchildren--twelve under the age of 7--had all been together.

The kids loved having a houseful of cousins to play with.

Ben particularly loved the hiding place he and his cousins commandeered under the stairs.

I loved this picture.

At the Cabin

We spent the week of Thanksgiving in Idaho visiting Chris' dad and his family.

We spent the first few days of the trip at their cabin, which made for a wonderful weekend.

The kids were thrilled to see snow for the first time this year.  We built a snowman.  We went sledding.  We hiked to the river.  We fed ducks and muskrats.  We made s'mores.

I think the highlight for the kids was a daytrip that we took to West Yellowstone, Montana.  We visited a wildlife center there, housing bears and wolves.  Cate and Ben were able to go inside the bears "lair" and hide food for the bears, which they later came out and uncovered.

I asked Ben later, "Were you scared?"

"A little," he replied.

"Of the bears?" I asked, although the guide had explained to us precisely how the bears were kept far, far away while the kids were inside.

"No," said Ben.  "I was a little scared I would slip on poop and fall into the bears' pond."

Fair enough.

Birthday Boy!

As is tradition at our house, Ben woke up on November 10 (his actual birthday) to a room filled with balloons.  Then he immediately began his birthday scavenger hunt, and his sisters were more than happy to help him decipher his clues.

After he opened his presents, he dug into his favorite breakfast (Hostess Mini Donettes) with gusto.

We left the events of the day up to him.  He had a friend's birthday party to attend in the morning so afterwards we headed to his favorite restaurant, the Saloon.

As soon as we walked into the Ped Mall, it occurred to Chris and I that it might have been a slight miscalcuation.  There was a home football game in Iowa City that day and I had (mistakenly) assumed that all of the drunk people would be in or around the stadium.

I was wrong.

It was as if we had arrived at 2:30 in the morning.  Drunken college students everywhere.  Questionable clothing choices.  And the kids witnessed their first bar fight.  Nice.

At least we didn't have to wait for a table at the Saloon.

After stuffing ourselves with queso, tortilla chips, and raspberry lemonade (Ben's favorite meal) we headed to Colonial Lanes for bowling and miniature golf.

Later that night we had pizza and ice cream while we had one last celebration with Grandma Joan, Grandpa Jerry, Uncle Devo, and Uncle Mikey.

Five.

My sweet little Benjer is officially five.

He kicked off his 5th birthday with a "spooky" party with his best buddies.  We played Pin-the-Eye on the Monster, wrapped Ben up as a (toilet paper mummy), danced to Halloween music, ran a relay race and "bashed" a Frankenstein pinata.

But I honestly think the best part for Ben was finally having enough kids to play with the parachute.

(NOTE:  We also had "spooky" food---spider cupcakes, pudding eyeballs, and more.  I only wish there had been more adults to appreciate my artistry!  It was certainly lost on the 4- and 5-year old crowd).
